An Ode to the Veteran

veteran and dog

It is the VETERAN,  not the preacher,

who has given us freedom of religion.

It is the VETERAN, not the reporter,

who has given us freedom of the press.

It is the VETERAN,  not the poet,

who has given us freedom of speech.

It is the VETERAN, not the campus organizer,

who has given us freedom to assemble.

It is the VETERAN,  not the lawyer,

who has given us the right to a fair trial.

It is the VETERAN,  not the politician,

Who has given us the right to vote.

It is the VETERAN who salutes the Flag,

It is the VETERAN who serves under the Flag,

ETERNAL REST GRANT THEM O LORD,

AND LET PERPETUAL LIGHT SHINE UPON THEM.

  1. I’m now in my 70’s and gave 24 years to the service of this great country of ours……no-one has ever said thank you….not even my family!!

  2. It is a great piece, CW, and so true. I wish some of those mentioned, like the reporters, campus organizers, lawyers and politicians would take heed and remember that our military fallen are those who paid for the cushy lives these people lead today. Some humility and appreciation would be in order.

  3. Beautiful and so very true, CW. We just got back from watching our annual Memorial Day Ride to Remember where thousands of motorcycle riders parade through town with a roar of thunder. With flags waving proudly, it’s a sea of red, white and blue. It’s an awesome tribute and a reminder to people that some gave all. Chokes me up every year. We can never thank our veterans enough.
