Sessions Asks for Resignations from 46 US Attorneys

Written by Lydia Wheeler, 3-10-17, at The Hill:

Attorney General Jeff Sessions has asked dozens of U.S. attorneys appointed by former President Obama to submit their resignations, the Department of Justice announced Friday.

U.S. attorneys are normally replaced at the beginning of new administrations. Of the 93 U.S. attorneys, 46 remain from the past administration, according to the Department of Justice (DOJ).

Sessions asked for the federal prosecutors to resign “in order to ensure a uniform transition,” DOJ spokeswoman Sarah Isgur Flores said in a statement.

“As was the case in prior transitions, many of the United States Attorneys nominated by the previous administration already have left the Department of Justice,” the spokeswoman said.

The DOJ said career prosecutors in Sessions’ office would continue investigations and prosecutions until the new U.S. attorneys are confirmed.

DOJ did not immediately respond to questions on whether the call for resignations applies to Preet Bharara, the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York.

Bharara reportedly met with Trump after the election and agreed to remain in his position during the Trump administration. Sessions also asked him to stay, the prosecutor told The New York Times.

Democracy 21, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington and the Campaign Legal Center sent a letter this week asking Bharara to investigate whether Trump has received payments or other benefits from foreign governments through his business interests, according to The Washington Post.

Under the “emoluments clause” of the Constitution, top officials are prohibited from receiving payments or favors from foreign governments.

Albeit ever so slowly, it seems Jeff Sessions is assisting Trump in draining the swamp. With the lack of cooperation from Schumer and the other mule-headed dems, confirmation of 46 new attorneys is going to take a long time.  They haven’t even confirmed Trump’s other cabinet members, so it could be summer before O’s chosen lawyers move on.

Still…it’s a start. Next stop – Koskinen at the IRS.

  1. It is a start. With all we’re hearing about Obama’s influence in the “shadow” government whose only purpose is to bring down Trump’s administration, there are a great number of other Obama-appointed bureaucrats that need to go as well. Trump needs to have a sizeable stall devoted to tracking down where these leak and opposition stories are originating. Many appear to have originated within the government and those are likely authored by the Obama hold-overs.

  2. The way I understand it, Zero’s boyz get shown the door ASAP. It may take months to get their replacements appointed and confirmed, but they, and their political agendas, will be long gone. In the meanwhile, the rank and file troops would step up to keep things running.

    • That would certainly be preferable, Salty, but when I read.. “The DOJ said career prosecutors in Sessions’ office would continue investigations and prosecutions until the new U.S. attorneys are confirmed”… I took it to mean the attorneys would stay on a while. Did I misunderstand?
