Mitch McConnell Throws Down The Gauntlet: ‘We Will Not Be Intimidated’

By Molly Prince, 10-3-18, at The Daily Caller:

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell scolded protesters Wednesday after weeks of harassment towards Republican members of the Senate for not actively opposing the nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court.

“Sometimes this intimidation campaign [against Kavanaugh’s confirmation] has been aimed at the nominee … and when that didn’t work, then the far left tried to bully and intimidate members of this body — Republican United States senators,” McConnell said on the Senate floor. “They’ve tried to bully and intimidate us.”

“One of our colleagues and his family were effectively run out of a restaurant in recent days by these people,” the Kentucky senator continued. “Another reported having protesters physically block his car door, and some have seen organized far left protesters camp out at their homes.”

Republican senators, especially members of the Senate Judiciary Committee have seen an increase in protests, disturbance and threats since President Donald Trump revealed Kavanaugh’s nomination in July. Committee chairman Chuck Grassley of Iowa and Sen. Jeff Flake of Arizona were even assigned special protection in response to the heightened levels of harassment.

“I’m not suggesting we’re the victims here … but I want to make it clear to these people who are chasing my members around the hall here or harassing them at the airport or going to their homes,” McConnell said. “We’ll not be intimidated by these people.”

The senate majority leader announced Monday that the full senate would be voting to confirm Kavanaugh by the end of the week, after a week-long FBI investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct was completed.

“There’s no chance in the world they’re going to scare us out of doing our duty,” McConnell said. “I don’t care how many members they chase, how many people they harass here in the halls, I want to make one thing perfectly clear: We will not be intimidated by these people.”

I watched the speech McConnell made on Monday and it was his usual low-volume, emotionless speech, so in comparison, this speech is fired up. He mentions people getting harassed at the airport and he was referring to himself, although there could be others. There was a video making the rounds yesterday that showed people crowding around him throwing questions at him, but luckily his security detail didn’t let them near enough to touch him.

We saw Chuck Grassley get fired up at hearings, then Lindsey Graham went off on the Dems like we’ve never seen before, and now Mitch McConnell found some backbone. Apparently these ‘old white men’ have had enough. Go get ’em, guys!!

  1. McConnell gave an impressive speech. I like that he shared the accounts of the Left’s tactics of intimidation and that he’s pushing back hard. The world needs to see the reality of who the real bullies are in this fight. As I said in a post not long ago, the Left is increasingly rejecting democracy and the notion that anyone but them should have power in our government. Their behavior over Kavanaugh confirms this better than anything else I could have added.

    • Their rejection of democracy has ratcheted up to include rejection of decency, due process and civility. They seem to think that storming Washington and harassing people is the way to get what they want, so it’s good to see the Rs taking a firmer stance against them. The Demwits don’t realize they’re only making things worse for themselves, and that it is highly likely we’ll see that reflected in the November mid-terms. Some people aren’t just walking away, they’re running away.

  2. Well, Trump is even making some rino’s into somewhat conservative Republicans! I see changes in many of the senators. We’ve got to keep him in office!! And give him the support he needs in congress!

That speech was authentic and good!

  3. Perhaps Mitch “the turtle” McConnell finally poked his head out of his shell

After all remember what those left wing nut jobs did to his wife not to long ago

Harassed her while she was getting into the car

And good for her that she gave it to them right back

    But those are the things…

    • Yes, he’s definitely pulled his head out of the shell. McConnell is prone to overlook a lot of the Dems’ stunts, but maybe this latest ploy was so blatant that even he couldn’t overlook it.
