David Hogg: Kavanaugh is Wrong Because AR-15s Shoot Further than Handguns

On September 5 gun control activist David Hogg suggested AR-15s cannot be used for self-defense because they shoot further than handguns.

He made this suggestion via a tweet which he sent in response Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh’s testimony that AR-15s and other semiautomatic rifles are used for “self-defense.”

Kavanaugh’s full statement was that “handguns and semi-automatic rifles are weapons used for hunting and for self-defense.”

But Hogg isolated the words “self-defense” and tried to make a point:

It should be noted that our nation has not witnessed an onslaught of individuals claiming they have used AR-15s or other commonly owned semiautomatic rifles for self-defense from 1,600 feet. In fact, deciding which guns can or cannot be used for self-defense based on an effective range of rifles versus handguns is like deciding which car you will drive in a 35 mile per hour zone based on the vehicles’ top speed.

Self-defense happens close and, contrary to Hogg’s suggestion, it happens with AR-15s and other commonly owned semi-automatic rifles as well as with handguns.

  • On January 11, 2013, Military.com reported that a 15-year-old Harris County boy used his father’s AR-15 to defend his sister from home invaders. The invaders targeted the home in the middle of the day, while the parents were at work. The boy shot one of the invaders multiple times, causing both suspects to flee.
  • On March 28, 2017, Breitbart News reported that an Oklahoma homeowner’s son used an AR-15 for self-defense, killing three home intruders.
  • On November 5, 2017, Stephen Willeford grabbed his AR-15 and ran toward the Sutherland Springs, Texas, church shooter. Upon arriving he shot the shooter, forcing him to flee the scene.
  • On February 27, 2018, Breitbart News reported that Dave Thomas witnessed his neighbor under knife attack, retrieved his AR-15, and ended the assault. Thomas said, “The AR-15 is my weapon of choice for home protection. It’s light, it’s maneuverable. If you train and know how to use it properly, it’s not dangerous. And this is just a perfect example of a good guy with an AR-15 stopped a bad guy with a knife. And there were no lives taken, so, all in all, it was a good day.”

As for Kavanaugh’s mention that AR-15s and other semiautomatics being used for “hunting,” on January 20, 2017, the Washington Post published a “White Paper” in which ATF Associate Deputy Director Ronald Turk said, “The use of AR-15s, AK-style, and similar rifles now commonly referred to as ‘modern sporting rifles’ has increased exponentially in sport shooting. These firearm types are now standard for hunting activities. ATF could re-examine its 20-year-old study to bring it up to date with the sports shooting landscape of today, which is vastly different than it was years ago.”

I’ll bet that this egotistical, self-aggrandizing, little creep thinks himself clever to tweet that “you’re not defending yourself (a pregnant pause) … you’re hunting.” Actually, if someone is shooting at you with a hunting rifle from 300 yds away, you ARE defending yourself by shooting back with an AR. But that’s not the point. The point is that he makes the idiotic statement that an AR-15 CANNOT be used for self-defense because it has the ability to shoot accurately at 300-500 yds, depending on optics, ammunition, shooter’s ability, etc.

The AR-15 has become a sportsman’s favorite for many folks who want a multi-purpose rifle that is effective for hunting as well as self-defense. In some cases, it may be the only firearm in the home and is, therefore by default, a home defense weapon (that can also be used for hunting).

It’s one thing for someone who is not knowledgeable about a subject to make statements that may be false – but do so honestly out of ignorance. Usually, they are appreciative when informed of their error as they’re honest and want their statements to be truthful and accurate. But this foul-mouthed, lying, scumbag has an agenda. He believes himself to be a democrat presidential candidate in training – only needing a few years of polishing before he’s ready to win an election and take his rightful place leading us poor dumb cretins out of the dark ages.

He’s capitalizing on being called a ‘survivor’ of the Parkland, FL school shooting. I don’t believe that it’s accurate to call him a ‘survivor.’ Yes, he was on school grounds when the shootings took place, but he was hiding in a closet in a different building. The high school is one of the largest in the country with over 3,200 students. David Hogg was one of over 2,000 students who were not in the same building as the shooter, never saw the shooter and wasn’t truly in danger (though they didn’t know it at the time). The true survivors were the seventeen who were actually wounded by Nikolas Cruz but survived. David Hogg is no ‘survivor,’ he’s just using his fifteen minutes of fame to establish a political career as an anti-gun activist.

  1. This little twit just won’t go away, will he? Depending on the situation and the weapon available, any gun can be used for self-defense. He’d know that if he’d do a little research before spewing that nonsense, but then the people who know the least, are usually the loudest. He could be Diane Feinstein’s kin.

  2. If brains were dynamite that punk wouldn’t have enough to blow his own nose.

This isn’t anything new. I can’t think of a single issue — quite literally not a single one — that Dem/socialists argue from a position of factual accuracy or logic. They’re completely dependent on sloganeering and hyper-emotionalism.

    Facts be damned.

    • Right, Brian. I think that the old bit about playing chess with a pigeon – no matter how right you are, he’ll just knock over the pieces, crap all over the board, and claim that he won – that describes David Hogg’s mentality. You know that facts and truth to the left are like sunshine on Count Dracula – death!

  3. Your comments are spot-on, Garnet.

Hogg is the typical liberal who knows so much that isn’t true. You’re correct that hearing the facts won’t change his beliefs or his know-it-all attitude.

Funny how Twitter and other social media giants will censor people because they say things that are “offensive,” but they won’t censor you just because you get the you’re proven wrong.
