This News Will Make You Glad You Don’t Live in Illinois Or Sad That You Do

By Kerry Picket, 8-4-17, at the Daily Caller:

Republican Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner signed a bill Friday establishing August 4 as “Barack Obama Day.”

The 44th president received the honor from his home state on his 56th birthday. The bill passed through both chambers of the state legislature without any dissenting votes.

“August 4th of each year is designated as Barack Obama Day, to be observed throughout the State as a day set apart to honor the 44th President of the United States of America who began his career serving the People of Illinois in both the Illinois State Senate and the United States Senate, and dedicated his life to protecting the rights of Americans and building bridges across communities,” the bill states.

Legislators tried to pass “Obama Day” back in March but the legislation failed by just six votes in the House. That particular bill would have made the day a legal holiday and cost Illinois taxpayers around $20 million in lost productivity, the Illinois Policy Institute reports.

Additionally, that failed legislation added costs if the holiday fell on a Sunday, so state workers would have Monday off.

Rauner told a Chicago Tribune reporter of the bill, “It’s incredibly proud for Illinois that the president came from Illinois. I think it’s awesome, and I think we should celebrate it.”

He added, “I don’t think it should be a formal holiday with paid, forced time off, but I think it should be a day of acknowledgment and celebration.”

In case you didn’t know it, Governor Rauner is a Republican, with both a Democratic Senate & House, so I’m thinking this was done as an obligatory move on his part, and the Dem packed Illinois state congress explains the lack of dissenting votes.

I guess if you’re dedicating a day to a former president, you have to say nice things, but in his case it was really long stretch.

“serving the People of Illinois”??  Oh, puh-leez, what did he ever do for Illinois other than return Chicago to the days of Al Capone?

“dedicated his life to protecting the rights of Americans”?? Oh, really? Are we talking about the same guy that inflamed racism again and brought in more illegal immigrants than in the past ten years combined??

That aside, savor this – they gave ’44’ his special day, but didn’t think he was worth a legal holiday that would cost them upwards of $20 million paid in salaries for state employees.

Some of the comments at Daily Caller made me laugh even more than a non-paid, presidential-commemorating holiday…

“April 1 would be more appropriate.”

“Do they celebrate it on the same day as the Gay Pride Parade?”

“I live in Illinois & will fly my American flag upside down every August 4th for the rest of my life.”

Laughter is good for the soul, is it not?

  1. Boy, Kathy, that made me want to urp.
Barack Obama Day. Dear Leader Day.
But it’s true that half the country thought he did a good job. That’s really scarey.

  2. Bruce Rauner demonstrates why the “Republican” label has become so meaningless. He either has no principles or no spine, or both.

I like the Daily Caller comments! If there has to be an Obama Day (that’s difficult to type without gagging) my suggestion would be to make it sometime in mid-November, just as people are absorbing the news about the latest increases to their healthcare costs.

  3. Chicago is a great city and one that deserves better than the democrat administrations that have been gradually reducing it to second-class status for the last 86 years. With its bonds at “junk” level, can’t pay its bills – especially pensions, schools floundering, and crime rampant, Chicago is sorely in need of some REAL management – and NOT Rahm Emanuel-style progressive/leftist socialism-lite.

  4. I grew up in Chicago glad I don’t live there anymore they have a 10.50 sales tax, a beverage tax if you buy a 12 pack of soda at 5.99 you will end up paying 9.66 after all the taxes but yet they are still in the red
Rauner had to do this he’s fighting a uphill battle on everything he tries to do
