CA Senate Takes Up Bill Ensuring Teachers Cannot Shoot Back

California’s Senate Appropriations Committee is scheduled to take up AB 424 — also known as SB 707 — early next week, as Senate Democrats consider Assemblyman Kevin McCarty’s (D-Sacramento) push to ensure teachers cannot shoot back if under attack.

The current law in California bars K-12 teachers with concealed carry permits from carrying on campus for self-defense unless they are given permission by their school districts. Five districts have chosen to allow teachers to be armed for self-defense. Those districts are Kern High School District, Kingsburg Joint Union High School District, Folsom Cordova Unified School District, Anderson Union High School District, and Palo Cedro’s North Cow Creek School District.

McCarthy’s bill is designed to repeal school districts’ authority to allow teachers with permits to carry, thereby guaranteeing the teachers will not be able to shoot back should a Sandy Hook-style attack unfold.

California’s Assembly passed McCarty’s bill on June 19, sending it to the Senate where it has already passed the Committee on Public Safety. It was opposed by both of the Republicans on the Public Safety Committee — Sens. Jeff Stone (Riverside) and Joel Anderson (Alpine)—but Democrats outnumber them by a margin of five to two.

McCarty’s bill will be taken up by the Appropriations Committee on July 10, when Democrats will once again have the opportunity to vote to be sure teachers cannot shoot back if under attack.

On May 12, Gun Owners of California’s Sam Peredes told Breitbart News that the exemption to allow teachers to conceal carry — with district permission — was more or less a token exemption. He said Democrat lawmakers did not expect districts to actually allow teachers to carry guns for defense of themselves and their students.

Peredes added, “Well, out of the one thousand school districts in California, five of them decided to allow concealed permit holders to carry on their campuses. That so ticked off the legislature that now they are going to take away the authority of even administrators to allow CCW holders to carry on their campuses.” reports that McCarty views disarming teachers a part of “closing a loophole in the Gun Free School Zone Act.”

Did you get that? Not only do the democrat gunophobics in California want to keep ordinary citizens from exercising their 2nd Amendment rights, they want to extend that meddling to the point of overriding local school districts from allowing teachers who already have permits to carry to exercise that right on school property.

The democrats admitted that the exception that allowed teachers to carry concealed on school property with district permission was just a “token exemption” because the democrat lawmakers didn’t think that any district would allow such repugnant actions.

Now that five districts have decided that they wanted armed and vetted teachers to safeguard their students by being able to fight back if another Sandy Hook event happened, the gunophobics are now reneging on that option.

They want to keep all of California’s schools as Gun Free Zones, just exactly the condition that invites another lunatic to enter another school and start shooting – who’s going to stop them? How many kids will die before police arrive and engage the shooter?

God forbid there’s a mass school shooting in California. If one did happen, who do you think the gun-grabbing democrats will blame?

And my final question: exactly how insane can these lawmakers be?

  1. My first thought was: Remove all armed guards from the California State House and Senate. See if they like being a ‘gun free zone’. But CW beat me to the punch!

As I read my thoughts went to how these idiots get elected. Much of California are good conservative people. But those people have been out numbered by illegal voters. Yes, I believe that. The other point that young tech literates have come to California for lucrative jobs is probably another reason for this turn around in voting. And it is a turn around. California used to be fairly conservative.

    Very sad.

  2. California has been overtaken by fools. It comes with the luxury of having lots of money from a handful of lucrative industries.

I wonder if there’s armed security at the California state capital buildings where these decisions are made? The leftists are usually careful to protect themselves.

  3. It’s no wonder people are leaving CA in droves. You’d think that after Columbine and Sandy Hook, the governments and the school districts would see the need for armed adults, but instead CA seems to be suicidal.

  4. Reminds me of the aftermath of 9/11. It turns out that at that point, there was an FAA provision which provided for crew members being armed IF their Company deemed it necessary. This was an old rule to cover incidences where flights went into areas of unrest or civil war, and hadn’t been invoked in decades. One of the first changes to the rules after 9/11 was to delete this provision. It took several years, and a change in the law, to force them to allow Flight Deck Duty Officers.

    • Thanks for your comment, Tregonsee! Yeah, we often wonder how some of our “representatives” can live their lives with their heads stuffed up their own asses. This California thing is par for them and how ridiculous their legislative sessions must be out there. I was just reading about their wanting to make California a “sanctuary state.” The state has much going for it, but common sense in their legislature ain’t one of them.
