Colleges giving degrees in … social justice!

From:,  by Paul Bremmer,  on Jun 24, 2017

High school students who aspire to be social justice warriors are increasingly finding higher education options available to them, as more than 100 colleges and universities in the U.S. now offer formal academic programs in “social justice,” according to research by the College Fix.

The Fix discovered at least 64 American colleges that offer minors in social justice or a markedly similar field. At least 18 schools offer four-year degrees and at least 15 offer master’s degrees.

There are even two universities that offer Ph.D. programs with a social justice focus: The University of Massachusetts-Amherst (Social Justice Education) and Fielding Graduate School in California (Inclusive Leadership for Social Justice).

Schools with social justice programs range from small private universities, such as Carleton College in Minnesota (B.A. in Human Rights and Social Justice), to large public universities, such as the University of Michigan (minor in Peace and Social Justice), to religious institutions such as Northeastern Seminary (M.A. in Theology and Social Justice). Even Cornell, an Ivy League school, has an MPA program in Human Rights and Social Justice.

These schools offer a wide variety of social justice-themed classes.

At Merrimack College, for instance, social justice majors can take a class called “Thinking Green: Environmental Justice, Gender, and Animal Rights.” Students in the University of Iowa’s social justice B.A. program can learn about the “History of American Inequality.” Ohio Wesleyan University offers a course on “Feminist Perspectives on Race and Gender in the Media.”

At the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, social justice minors can learn about “Gay & Lesbian Literature,” while Oregon State University offers an entire program in “Food in Culture and Social Justice,” including a course titled “Food and Ethnic Identity: Decolonizing Our Food and Body.”

Scott Greer, deputy editor at the Daily Caller, can only shake his head at the rise of these non-traditional academic programs.

“Social justice degrees are a logical conclusion to the prevalent trends within higher education that stress teaching left-wing orthodoxy over real-life skills,” Greer told WND. “It’s unclear how this major will help a student navigate a real workplace environment, and is likely only going to encourage them to identify every little thing as a representation of white supremacy.”

Greer, the author of “No Campus For White Men: The Transformation of Higher Education Into Hateful Indoctrination,” said there is one good thing about the creation of social justice majors: “It exposes the fraudulent priorities of contemporary higher education.”

International journalist and educator Alex Newman, co-author of “Crimes of the Educators,” said the appearance of social justice degrees is a natural byproduct of a public K-12 education system that no longer prioritizes real education.

“After generations of dumbing down and indoctrinating children in government schools, it was inevitable that this would happen someday,” Newman told WND. “As Dr. Samuel Blumenfeld and I show in ‘Crimes of the Educators,’ this sort of lunacy is the bitter fruit produced by the poison tree that is the ‘progressive,’ anti-Christian, anti-liberty, collectivist government education inflicted on the American people by socialist humanist John Dewey and his radical cohorts. Now the proverbial chickens are coming home to roost.”

Newman foresees devastating consequences for the country: “Legions of brainwashed social-justice warriors with ‘community organizing’ skills and thorough statist and humanist indoctrination will constantly agitate for more government, less freedom, more globalism, more insanity, and more tax funding to feed the perpetually expanding beast that has been unleashed on America and the world.”

Newman suspects those who graduate with social justice degrees will have trouble getting real-world jobs that create value for society. On the contrary, he worries about the adverse effects they will have on society.

“The danger, if taxpayers and voters are not vigilant, is that these indoctrinated overgrown children will end up burrowing their way into government and becoming a permanent parasite class that sustains itself by leeching off the taxpayer and making ever-more ludicrous demands,” Newman warned.

“These taxpayer-funded universities are producing zealots to wage war on God, Christianity, and liberty on an industrial scale. Taxpayers and voters must demand an end to it.”

There are so many things wrong with this concept of educating “Social Justice Warriors” (SJW) in college and awarding degrees in that “discipline,” that I hardly know where to start.

The whole concept has to rely on the idea that “social justice” can never be achieved else the SJW’s will be out of jobs, therefore, it is to their benefit to keep the issues contentious or their jobs go away. Who hires an SJW anyway? Perhaps a few activist groups, but realistically, there aren’t a lot of good paying jobs awaiting a graduate with a major in Social Justice.

I can’t imagine anyone engaged in a for-profit commercial business having any desire for an SJW graduate to be employed. In fact, I’d avoid them like the plague. Social Justice Warrior is just a pompous euphemism for “rabble rouser” and most business people wouldn’t want anyone like that within miles of their operation.

As a byproduct of their educational concentration, they will have been immersed in trigger warnings, safe spaces, microaggressions, and the like – the tools of the trade for social justice warriors and concepts that don’t fit in the real world outside of college. Essentially, their SJW concentration in college will have left them impotent in dealing with personal interactions and commerce outside of the hallowed halls of the university.

Perhaps the most disturbing facet of this training is that for each SJW course taken, it replaces a course that could have been constructive in educating a more productive, more capable citizen. But, for the left-wing progressives, it’s not to their advantage to have a knowledgeable citizenry, so it’s not surprising that they are pushing this effort to replace economics, history, math, and languages with a social justice curriculum.

It serves their purpose to have more dumbass rabble rousers to keep the pot stirred.

  1. “…a permanent parasite class…”

I can’t think of a more perfect label for this group.

If anyone wonders who will hire people with a degree in “Social Justice,” the answer is any field that’s widely infested with the Left: schools, universities, ‘mainstream’ media companies, the ACLU and other legal organizations, leftwing think tanks, the NAACP, politicians (so they can groom them to become the next generation of politicians) and the government, of course. Having a degree in “Social Justice” takes the guess work out of who will fall in line with the leftwing, socialist agenda. Those groups that make a business out of wealth transfer will instantly know which job candidates are already on the same page, ideologically speaking.

As our fellow bloggers have suggested, getting government funding out of higher education is one key to solving this problem. The other key is to get the federal government back to the way the Founder’s envisioned it, i.e. small and limited. This will dry up the sources of money from all sides of this problem. Left to the mercy of the free market the “Social Justice” industry will die a certain death, although it will undoubtedly howl in pain until the very end.

    Great post, Garnet.

  2. Good grief, they can get a degree in rage, and they’ll expect that $15 hourly wage or much more, but won’t be qualified to do squat. That unqualified employee will come bringing a lot of bad attitude, therefore being unhirable, so we’ll end up with yet more people on the dole.

    • Taking this ridiculous path through college cannot end well – for the student, for his/her parents, or for us taxpayers. You’re right, we’re educating our young people on nothing that will enable productive employment and so the only benefit to them is that they learn how to community organize to fight for more welfare.

  3. There should be a way to not give taxpayer funding to these schools. Don’t the parents pay attention to what they’re learning?

    • I’d bet that many parents don’t even know what degree program their kid is enrolled in, much less what individual courses he/she is taking – only that the kid is in college and will be self-sufficient when he/she graduates (fat chance).

  4. Their parents could save themselves four years of time by just piling up a stack of money in a burn barrel and setting it on fire.

If my kid said they wanted to go to college to “study” such nonsense I’d tell him he had to pay his own damned way. His first experience with REAL “social justice”: personal responsibility.

  5. Good one, Garnet!

The simple solution is to deny federal funding for students pursuing degree programs not tied to a direct employment potentiality. What job does a Queer Studies graduate qualify for?? The same is true for ethnic and gender studies. Universities that offer degree programs not tied to economic betterment of the students and nation should likewise have their funding divested.

Crawfish is right! The adults need to take over again, and cut off the money and social approval!

  6. OhgoodLord. It is high time for the ADULTS to take over academia. All of these SJW courses, along with the long-standing “women’s studies” and the like, simply need to be done away with at all universities that get taxpayer funding. We simply must return universities to places of somewhat serious learning that set up students fir life in the real world.

    • You’d think that showing that new course can be expected to achieve results in the job market or in enhanced earnings should be a prerequisite to being accepted. That requirement alone would preclude these nonsensical courses from ever seeing the light of day, much less become offerings in college curricula.
