SACRAMENTO, CALIF. Being a communist would no longer be a fireable offense for California government employees under a bill passed Monday by the state Assembly.
Lawmakers narrowly approved the bill to repeal part of a law enacted during the Red Scare of the 1940s and ’50s when the fear that communists were trying to infiltrate and overthrow the U.S. government was rampant. The bill now goes to the Senate.
It would eliminate part of the law that allows public employees to be fired for being a member of the Communist Party.
Employees could still be fired for being members of organizations they know to advocate for overthrowing the government by force or violence.
The bill updates an outdated provision in state law, said Assemblyman Rob Bonta, the San Francisco Bay Area Democrat who authored the measure.
Some Assembly Republicans said the Cold War-era law should not be changed.
Assemblyman Randy Voepel, a Southern California Republican who fought in the Vietnam War, said communists in North Korea and China are “still a threat.”
“This bill is blatantly offensive to all Californians,” said Assemblyman Travis Allen, a Republican who represents a coastal district in Southern California. “Communism stands for everything that the United States stands against.”
The Dixie Chicks had a right to say that they were ashamed of President Bush. Maxine Waters has a right to be ashamed of President Trump. These people have every right to publicly express their shame regarding our president and I have every right to confess my shame at the State of California for being part of the United States.
I’m ashamed of an accumulation of un-American actions that convince me that the state has become a testing ground for Marxists, Socialists, and subversives of all flavors who are displaying what they have planned for the rest of the states if (God forbid) they ever achieve national power.
I said earlier today in a comment on another post, that it seems that each and every day I see new evidence of policies and legislation coming out of California that are in opposition to American values and the way of life that made this country great.
I am ashamed that California is one of our 50 states. It’s a beautiful state blessed with temperate climate, mountains, and seashore; everything a human could desire – except for the political climate.
I know that there are good, solid Americans out there, but they’re apparently not powerful enough to stem the rampant leftward un-American movement that is ongoing there. California has always been regarded as a global trendsetter in both popular culture and politics, and it scares me to think that what has afflicted the good people of California may take hold in other states as well. California historically has been an incubator for political ideas and concepts that worked their way into the rest of the country a few years later. I pray that we’re able to stamp out the infection before it’s too late.
From their ill-advised sanctuary city policies to the activities in the University of California system to the bullet train and worship of the snail darter, something must be in the air or water that is causing California’s progressives to throw away everything that transpired to make the state great and to establish a new Utopia where everyone is “safe” and no disparaging words are ever heard – or some other similar crap.
