Texas Waffle House Customer Shoots Robber Armed with AK-47

A man armed with an AK-47 is alleged to have entered a Waffle House in DeSoto, Texas, in the early morning hours last Thursday. The robbery suspect was not counting on the presence of a Texan with a Handgun License to Carry.

The alleged robber, described as a black man in his mid-twenties, entered the  DeSoto Waffle House at about 2:30 a.m. on July 7, while armed with an AK-47 rifle, information obtained by Breitbart Texas from the DeSoto Police Department revealed. After robbing several of the customers, the man walked out of the diner. One of the customers followed the man out of the restaurant and attempted to stop him.

The customer knew that his wife was on her way to the Waffle House and feared she might be in danger in the parking lot. He was afraid the armed man might harm her or others in the parking lot, officials said.

After following the man out of the Waffle House, the customer called out to the robber who turned and pointed the rifle at him.

The customer fired several shots from his handgun and stopped the robber.

Police officers arrived on the scene a short time later and found the man lying in the parking lot. He was transported to a local hospital where he remains in critical condition. Originally, the suspect had not yet been identified and police were asking for the public’s assistance in figuring out who the man is. Overnight, the police learned the man is 26-year-old Antoine Devon Cooper of Dallas, Sergeant Nic Bristow told Breitbart Texas Thursday morning.

Cooper is covered in tattoos as can be seen in the photos above that were released by police.

He is reported to be in critical condition and on life support.

The customer was carrying a concealed handgun and was in possession of a Texas Handgun License to Carry. The license allows a qualified holder to carry a handgun concealed or openly under a wide range of conditions and locations. No charges have been filed against the customer. Texas law allows a person to use deadly force when they believe their life, or the lives of others are in danger of death or serious bodily injury.

I must confess that I like a Waffle House cheeseburger and hash browns late at night, but it oughtn’t to be a likely target of criminals looking to get rich. It does seem like overkill  – a criminal with an AK robbing a Waffle House? It’s not like they’re likely to have thousands in the register, but I guess he was looking for easy pickin’s. It is easy to see who is in the restaurant (no uniformed police) and they’re often in areas where they’re the only business still open at night. Criminals will learn (eventually) that robbing a late night eatery in Texas is likely to piss off any number of concealed carrying Texans – and that ain’t such a good idea. This perp got what was coming to him – good riddance.

FYI: DeSoto is a suburb of Dallas and has a population of about 50,000.

  1. Isn’t funny how “the poor” always seem to have plenty of money for tattoos?

I hope the thug dies. Otherwise he’ll recuperate at our expense, be housed and fed for a little while at our expense, and then he’ll be released back into the population where someday he’ll probably kill some innocent person. The man who shot him is a hero. Set your watches, though. The same morons who questioned whether the Dallas police used excessive force to blow up the recent sniper-murderer are going to whine that shooting this thug was a use of unnecessary force.

  2. True, you can’t fix stupid, and maybe that’s why he has 1990 tattooed on his arm – so he can remember when he was born, lol.

    • Great sleuth work, Kathy! I had to go back and look closely to make out anything in that blur of tats that he must have paid hundreds for (real smart economics) and 1990 would have been his birth year. I’ll bet his name is somewhere in there too, for the same reason.

  3. AK-47? For a retail stick up? Seems a poor choice to me. And the perp was obviously not competent with it, thank goodness. The CHL holder rightfully took care of business.

    • Rumor has it that his “everyday” gun was a 9mm Glock, but he didn’t have any ammo for it so he robs the Waffle House to get money for 9mm ammo. He complained about welfare not being enough to buy quality ammunition and commented, “I ain’t got no ammo fo my 9 and how can you shoot nobody when you ain’t got no ammo”?

  4. Welcome to Texas.
Don’t do stupid, ’cause we WILL cap your dumbass!
