The Cruz campaign has issued the following statement on the private meeting today between Senator Cruz, Donald Trump, and Chairman Priebus.

HOUSTON, Texas – Cruz spokeswoman Catherine Frazier issued the following statement regarding the meeting between U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, and Donald Trump this morning:

“Sen. Cruz and Donald Trump had a good meeting this morning. There was no discussion of any endorsement. Mr. Trump asked Sen. Cruz to speak at the Republican convention, and Sen. Cruz said he would be happy to do so. Mr. Trump also asked Sen. Cruz for his counsel on future judicial nominations, and Cruz responded he would continue to do everything he can to help ensure principled constitutionalists on the courts.”

So endorsement, no, speaking slot, yes. But nothing ruled out, either. Very, very interesting.

  1. “Mr. Trump also asked Sen. Cruz for his counsel on future judicial nominations, and Cruz responded he would continue to do everything he can to help ensure principled constitutionalists on the courts.”

Two and a half thoughts on that last statement:
1). It’s possible Trump realizes he is in over his head and needs counsel on selecting the right people for the Supreme Court.
2.) Cruz’ love and concern for this country spurs him to help correct the course regardless of personal feelings or previous campaign comments. For me, that’s far more noble than staying away.
2.a) Perhaps he wants to be at the convention to see what those delegates have up their sleeve.

    Very interesting indeed.

  2. I guess we’re going to see just how foolish Donald Trump really is, Curtis. He NEEDS Cruz supporters if he wants to beat Hillary, but his ego needs for Cruz to bow to him. I suspect that while Cruz might not endorse Trump, he would at least be helpful to Trump indirectly by making the case against Hillary. That’s the calculation a wise man would make, IMO.

Taking Cruz as his VP would probably have been the one thing that would get me to commit to supporting Trump. Ironically, it would also be the one thing that would lessen Mr. Cruz in my eyes.

    This election sucks.

  3. It depends on how this unfolds over the next two weeks, and what he actually says.

The fact that Trump backed of his demand for a prior endorsement is noteworthy.

I’d suggest that Priebus pointed out to Trump that Cruz has enough delegates to have his name put in nomination, which would command his right to speak to the Convention. Once he understood that, Trump knew that the optics were more favorable for him to extend an “invitation”.

  4. I’m like tannngl – I would have preferred that Cruz kept his distance from the Party and Trump. Getting into bed with them at this late date just reeks of desperation to speak and what is the likelihood that Trump is going to take any advice from Ted about anything? Zero. Zip. Nada.

  5. I’m disappointed Cruz is going there to speak. I think.
    I’m kind of ambivalent.
