Mike Smith, a small business attorney in Colorado Springs, Colorado has launched an independent bid for the White House.
As the Republican and Democratic primaries head for the home stretch, Smith is attempting an insurgency candidacy that could shake up the race.
According to his website, www.MikeSmith2016.org, Smith was a White House intern in 2006, serving in the Presidential Personnel Office, where he provided assistance to an office responsible for recruiting executives to serve the President in the U.S. Department of Commerce, the U.S. Department of the Treasury and the U.S. Department of Transportation. He claims that his desire is to ensure that his four sons enjoy the same American freedoms available to his generation and the realization that the remaining presidential candidates are ill-prepared for that task, compelled him to enter the 2016 race as a citizen statesman.
“Millions of Americans are looking for an outsider candidate in 2016 and I am the only true outsider in this race”, claims Smith. Smith continued, “I believe the hero in the American story has always been and will always be ‘We the People’. One thing I am certain of in 2016, the American people will determine who our next President will be — not a backroom convention deal, superdelegates, party bosses, the establishment, the political class, the Democratic Party, or the Republican Party. There is a sure fire way that an independent candidate from the middle class can win the Presidency- the American people stand united against our broken two party system and make their voice heard with their vote in November.”
While the success of a third party candidacy seems unlikely at this late hour, the idea of a viable third option may be an increasing desire in the minds of voters. A recent Gallup poll found that 60% of Americans say that a third political party is needed because the Republican and Democratic parties “do such a poor job” of representing the American people.
Interestingly, a Breitbart article from February 3, 2016 titled The Smith Project: What Voters Want, makes a strong case that an unknown hypothetical “Candidate Smith” could actually win in 2016.
Americans aren’t happy with either of the inevitable presidential choices and have talked a great deal lately about voting for a third party candidate. Mitt Romney lamely even tried to revive John Kasich as an alternative, which was an incredibly stupid move since Kasich already had a shot at the job and received little support.
Enter one Mike Smith, basically unknown to anyone outside his circle, who’s offering to take the job and according to his website his stances on the issues are conservative.
Here’s an excerpt from his statement on illegal immigration –
First and foremost, we must secure our southern border. It is a matter of national security. We cannot allow drug cartels, criminals, gangs, thugs, smugglers, and Radical Islamic Terrorists to cross our border at will. Considering the length of the border and the diverse terrain, “building a wall” is too simplistic of an approach. Securing the border must include additional sections of a border wall, thousands of additional border patrol agents, remote surveillance systems, ground sensors, drone surveillance, and the cooperation of private land owners along with federal, state, and local governments. Securing the border once and for all will require a three-pronged approach, which includes technology, infrastructure, and personnel. As President, I will work with federal, state, and local authorities in order to identify the most effective approaches to secure each section of the border.
Secondly, as President, I will enforce our current immigration laws on the books in order to get undocumented immigrants who commit crimes off of our streets and deported as soon as possible. I will also rescind all unconstitutional executive orders on amnesty. I will support legislation to eliminate federal funding for sanctuary cities, strict repercussions for undocumented immigrants who return to the U.S. after deportation, and the strengthening of the E-Verify system.
A president willing to enforce our laws rather than circumvent them? How refreshing that would be. If Americans are serious about a third party candidate with no strings attached, here’s their chance to put their money where their mouth is.
